Fatima Kola is a doctoral candidate and teaching fellow at University College London, where as a Bonnart-Braunthal scholar she is researching the legal and moral dimensions of the international prohibition on torture, and the permissibility as torture as a response to terrorism.

The Baggage Handler

(a pseudonym) works as a psychoanalyst in the bay area, and is a member of the clinical staff of Survivors International in San Francisco. In addition to working with traumatized torture survivors, he also works with traumatized veterans. He is a veteran himself, and a graduate of the SERE program. Salient Observation

A salient observation made by-- of all people-- Michael Hayden and Michael Mukasey:

[The memos' release] assures that the suspension [of 'enhanced interrogation'] imposed by the president's executive order is effectively permanent. There would be little point in the president authorizing measures whose nature and precise limits have already been disclosed in detail...

This is precisely what Obama intended-- and failing requisite prosecutions-- will remain the chief obstacle to re-authorization of 'enhanced' torture in the future.
